What Is Noorani Qaida?

Noorani Qaida (نورانی قاعدہ) is the most widely used Quran reading primer in the world, developed by Molvi Noor Muhammad Ludhyanvi of India. The word "Qaida" means "foundation" or "rule" in Arabic, and that is exactly what this book provides — a complete foundation for reading the Quran correctly before a student ever opens the Mushaf itself.

The book is structured as a carefully sequenced curriculum that begins with the recognition and pronunciation of individual Arabic letters, then progresses through vowel marks (Harakat), nunation (Tanween), doubled consonants (Shaddah), elongation rules (Madd), and finally the basic rules of Tajweed that govern proper Quranic recitation. Each stage builds directly on the previous one, ensuring that students develop a solid, error-free foundation at every step.

What makes Noorani Qaida particularly effective for English-speaking students in the UK, USA, Canada, and Australia is its colour-coded system and phonetic approach, which helps learners who have no prior exposure to Arabic to connect sounds to symbols quickly and accurately. Unlike learning Arabic as a language, Noorani Qaida focuses specifically on the reading skills needed for Quranic recitation — making it the fastest and most direct path to reading the Quran for any beginner.

6-Stage Noorani Qaida Curriculum

Stage 1: Arabic Alphabet (Weeks 1–3)

Students learn to recognise and pronounce all 29 Arabic letters in isolation, in their beginning, middle, and end forms. Special attention is given to distinguishing similar-looking letters such as ب، ت، ث and ح، خ، ج.

Stage 2: Harakat and Short Vowels (Weeks 4–6)

Students learn the three short vowels — Fathah, Kasrah, and Dhammah — and practise reading letters with all three vowels. Sukoon (the absence of a vowel) is also introduced, along with two-letter and three-letter combinations.

Stage 3: Tanween and Shaddah (Weeks 7–9)

Tanween (nunation) in its three forms — Tanween Fath, Tanween Kasr, and Tanween Damm — is introduced alongside Shaddah (the doubled consonant). Students practise reading full Quranic words with Tanween.

Stage 4: Madd (Elongation) Rules (Weeks 10–12)

Students learn the three Madd letters — Alif, Waw, and Ya — and the rule of Madd Asli (natural elongation of two counts). They practise recognising Madd letters in Quranic text and reading full ayaat with correct elongation.

Stage 5: Joining and Compound Letters (Weeks 13–15)

Students learn to join 2, 3, and 4-letter words and study the rules of Lam Shamsiyyah and Lam Qamariyyah, as well as Hamzatul Wasl and Hamzatul Qat'. By the end of this stage, students can read longer Quranic phrases fluently.

Stage 6: Basic Tajweed and Quran Reading (Weeks 16–18)

Students are introduced to the foundational Tajweed rules: Noon Sakinah and Tanween rules (Ikhfa, Idgham, Iqlab, Izhar), Meem Sakinah rules, and Waqf (stopping) signs in the Quran. The stage concludes with reading Surah Al-Fatiha and short Surahs with full Tajweed.

Frequently Asked Questions About Noorani Qaida

What is Noorani Qaida and why is it important?

Noorani Qaida is a foundational Arabic reading primer developed by Molvi Noor Muhammad Ludhyanvi specifically to teach beginners how to read the Quran correctly. It introduces the Arabic alphabet, vowel marks (Harakat), elongation rules (Madd), and the basic principles of Tajweed in a carefully sequenced, step-by-step method. It is considered the most widely used and trusted starting point for Quran education globally because it builds correct pronunciation habits from the very first lesson, preventing errors that are difficult to unlearn later. Every child and adult who wants to read the Quran fluently and accurately should begin with Noorani Qaida before moving on to the full Quran text.

How long does it take to complete Noorani Qaida?

The time to complete Noorani Qaida depends on the student's age, prior exposure to Arabic, and the frequency of lessons. For children aged 4 to 8 attending three lessons per week, most students complete the full Noorani Qaida in 3 to 5 months. Older children and teenagers typically finish in 2 to 3 months due to faster retention. Adults who are complete beginners usually complete it in 3 to 4 months with consistent practice. At Al-Furqan Academy, our tutors track each student's progress individually and adjust the pace to ensure thorough understanding at every stage rather than rushing through the material.

Is Noorani Qaida suitable for adults who have never learned Arabic?

Absolutely. Noorani Qaida is designed for complete beginners regardless of age, and many of our most successful students are adults who never had the opportunity to learn Quran reading as children. Adults often progress faster than young children because they can concentrate for longer periods and understand the rules more analytically. Our tutors are experienced in teaching adult learners and adapt their teaching style accordingly — using clear explanations, relatable examples, and a patient, non-judgmental approach. There is no age limit for learning the Quran, and Noorani Qaida is the ideal starting point for any adult beginning their Quranic journey.
